  • Deputies: Large bird attacked, killed its owner

Cassowary diets consist exclusively of fruit, but each of the birds' three-toed feet hides a "dagger-like" claw on the inner toe that can grow up to 4 inches long, according to information published online by the San Diego Zoo.

According to Alachua County Fire Rescue, 75-year-old Marvin Hajos was near his pet cassowary when he fell and the bird attacked. "When he fell, he was attacked", Taylor said.

"It looks like it was accidental", deputy chief Jeff Taylor told the Gainesville Sun newspaper.

He said first responders got a call at 10am on Friday and rushed the man to a hospital for trauma care but he died.

The man, named in U.S. media as Marvin Hajos, was mauled at 10am yesterday.

"We're looking to confirm our suspicions that this is a terrible accident for the man and his family", Lt. Rhodenizer said.

"My understanding is that the gentleman was in the vicinity of the bird and at some point fell".

A Florida man who authorities believe was breeding cassowaries has been killed by one of the birds.

Rhodenizer said the cassowary that attacked Hajos was secured and remained on Hajos' property.

They're not usually found in the United States, but they are sought out by exotic animal lovers and do require a permit to own. They are similar to emus, standing up to 1.8 metres tall and growing to up to 60 kilograms with black body feathers and bright blue heads and necks. It likely took the bird, which can run up to 31 miles per hour (50 kmph), mere seconds to close in on its prey and tear him into pieces.

Cassowaries are eaten in parts of New Guinea.

They are not raised for food, but are sought after by collectors.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission said that to own a cassowary, owners should have "substantial experience" and meet specific cage requirements.
