Worknesh Degefa and Lawrence Cherono win Boston Marathon

Lawrence Cherono out-sprinted Lelisa Desisa in the last 100 meters to win the men's race by just two seconds.

Cherono finished in a time of 2:07:57, while Desisa Benti crossed in 2:07:59.

The women's race was won by Ethiopia's Worknesh Degefa in 2:23.31 ahead of Kenyan Edna Kiplagat and Jordan Hasay of America.

Last year's second-place finisher, full-time nurse Sarah Sellers of Tucson, also improved her time from last year but finished 19th.


Joan Benoit Samuelson is embraced Monday by Boston Athletic Association CEO Tom Grilk after she finished the 123rd Boston Marathon.

Schulte, 40, was first to arrive at the finish line on Boylston Street, in a time of 2 hours, 36 minutes and eight seconds.

In the men's race, the halfway point was passed in 64:28 and the lead group - led by Kenya's Geoffrey Kirui, Ethiopia's Lemi Berhanu Hayle and USA's Scott Fauble - remained 11-strong at 20 miles, where the clock showed 1:38:37.

Brooke-Alvinston's "Marathon Mom" had another impressive run at this year's Boston Marathon.
