Why the world is unhappy with India’s anti-satellite missile test

"That is a bad, awful thing to create an event that sends debris at an apogee that goes above the International Space Station", he said, adding: "That kind of activity is not compatible with the future of human spaceflight".

On Tuesday, Tapan Misra, senior advisor to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chairman, said that India would not conduct any actions to deliberately cause accidents in space, as reported by The Indian Express.

On March 27th, the Indian Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) did something few other countries have accomplished: they launched a missile that destroyed one of their own satellites in low Earth orbit, on objective. The event has led to 400 pieces of orbital debris and might be risky for astronauts aboard on the International Space Station (ISS). It said that India had put the ISS at risk by creating a huge amount of debris.

The International Space Station was launched way back in 1998 and has been seen over 54 crewed missions. "That kind of activity is not compatible with the future of human spaceflight that we need to see have happen", he had said.

The Foreign Office further said such test should be a matter of grave concern for the global community not only in terms of generation of space debris but also because of its ramifications for long term sustainability of peaceful space activities. "Whatever debris that is generated will decay and fall back on to the Earth within weeks", it said.

India is the fourth country to have carried out such a test.

The Indian satellite was destroyed at a relatively low altitude of 180 miles (300km), well below the ISS and most satellites in orbit. With that, India became only the fourth country to test an Anti-Satellite (ASAT) weapon - used to attack enemy satellites or intercepting ballistic missiles - after the US, China, and Russian Federation.

NASA and Combined Space Operations Centre reportedly identified 400 pieces of space from India's A-SAT test.

The Starliner spacecraft, which is in the final phase of ground tests, is set to be launched into space atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

Such activities are placed at risk by these kinds of events, he said, and "when one country does it, then other countries feel like they have to do it as well", he said.

Indian officials said the test was done in the lower atmosphere to ensure there are no pieces orbiting around the Earth. The ISS is "still safe", he said, adding the ISS could be manoeuvred if necessary, a contingency he described as having "low" probability.

"We are learning more and more every hour that goes by about this orbital debris that has been created from this anti-satellite test".
