University students vote to pay reparations

  • Georgetown students to vote on slavery reparations fund

The slavery case dated back to 1838 when the Jesuit university chose to sell the slaves to plantations in Louisiana to pay off debts, in a deal worth the equivalent of $3.3m. As a result of the resolution, students will now be charged an additional $27.20 per semester.

Students at Georgetown University students have approved a referendum to add a reparation fee to their tuition that will go to descendants of slaves the school sold almost 200 years ago. Sixty-six percent of the 3,845 participating students voted yes, but the measure still must be approved by the university to go into effect.

Georgetown's new tuition fee would be allocated to descendants of the GU272, the 272 slaves who were sold by the Maryland Province of Jesuits in 1838 to assist the university when it was struggling with debt, the referendum states.

The move comes as Democratic presidential candidates debate whether the U.S. should provide compensation to the descendants of African-American slaves.

But several 2020 Democratic hopefuls, including Senator Elizabeth Warren and Julian Castro, the former mayor of San Antonio, have come out strongly in favor of reparations.

Georgetown is the first major college to pass such a reparations fund.

If approved by the university board, the fund will go towards "charitable purposes" supporting the descendants of those slaves, many of whom now live in Louisiana and Maryland.

School spokesman Matt Hill told CBS before the vote that no matter how the students cast their ballots, Georgetown would "remain committed to engaging with students, descendants, and the broader Georgetown community and addressing its historical relationship to slavery".

After Thursday's vote, the university released a statement saying the university "has made a commitment to further our efforts".

"There are many approaches that enable our community to respond to the legacies of slavery", Olson said. Student referendums help to express important student perspectives but do not create university policy and are not binding on the university.
