Surface Buds? Microsoft working on its own Apple AirPods competitor, report says

  • Microsoft Surface Buds could see Cortana challenge AirPods

According to a new report from Brad Sams, the software giant has been paying attention to Apple's success with the AirPods, and it has been working on its own Surface-branded wireless earbuds. If you skipped the Surface Headphones, would you be more interested in wireless Surface Buds from Microsoft?

Apple's lineup of AirPods wireless earbuds has been immensely successful, and the rest of the tech industry is still trying to catch up.

Thurrott also reported that Microsoft was aiming it easier to read on your phone by "improving interactions between the handset and the earbuds".

The device is being developed as part of a secret project, codenamed 'Morrison, ' and could be coming as soon as later this year. "The company is looking to capitalize upon the development of its audio tech by expanding its portfolio to cover the two major categories of headphones: over-ear and in-ear".

The earbuds, which are now in development, are code-named Morrison but could be called "Surface Buds" when they launch for consumers. While Cortana voice control seems like a possibility, Microsoft no longer sees its virtual assistant as a direct competitor to Amazon's Alexa or Google Assistant. The earbuds are said to come with Cortana integration and may include noise cancellation feature as well.

Microsoft has not confirmed the report and as such, there is no timetable for the earbuds release.

They'll come with a wireless charging case akin to the one just released with Apple's second-generation AirPods. Sams says Microsoft's Surface Buds could launch in 2019, but cautions that it's "not guaranteed".
