NYC Declares Public Health Emergency over Measles Outbreak

  • Measles epidemic spreads to Westchester — 8 unvaccinated kids contract disease

New York City health officials have made vaccinations mandatory in its hardest hit communities, threatening fines up to $1,000 for noncompliance, The Associated Press reports. The city health department ordered all ultra-Orthodox Jewish schools in a neighborhood of Brooklyn on Monday to exclude unvaccinated students from classes during the current measles outbreak.

With 285 cases already documented here this year (versus just two in all of 2017), the city is requiring everyone in Williamsburg to get the measles vaccines.

De Blasio said Tuesday that he was confident New York City's vaccination order would survive any legal challenge. Anyone who is unable to locate their vaccination record should get the MMR vaccine, as it is not harmful to receive additional doses.

"Measles is a unsafe, potentially deadly disease that can easily be prevented with vaccine", Dr. Herminia Palacio, deputy mayor for Health and Human Services explained.

"Call your healthcare provider as soon as possible", Amler said: "The MMR vaccine is very safe and effective".

Measles outbreaks have appeared in 19 states since the beginning of the year with the growing number of cases contributing to the now-second-largest outbreak in the United States since measles was eliminated in 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports.

Avi, 17, a resident of Kensington, Brooklyn, said he and hasn't seen any cases of measles.

Public health officials insist otherwise.

This comes as Rockland County Executive Ed Day says his health department is finalizing new orders to combat a measles outbreak while a judge put his initial emergency declaration on hold.

"I don't expect that people are running out [to get vaccinated]". It's unclear whether "make sure people are vaccinated" means "hold them down and inject them against their will".

It is too early to know if the highly contagious respiratory disease spread during recent spring break travels, and the Utah Department of Health was reporting no cases as of Thursday. He said that most things that happen in Jewish communities get blown out of proportion, "If it [the outbreak] was true, there would be signs outside every synagogue telling people not to go in, and there aren't".

The year is already shaping up to be one of the worst for measles outbreaks across the nation. Complications can include hearing loss, pneumonia, swelling of the brain and death.

The mayor said an estimated 1,800 children in the neighborhood are still unvaccinated, so it was "time to take a more muscular approach", he said.

He added: "There's an outbreak of measles in north county Dublin, and that is only because the uptake of the MMR vaccine is much lower than it should be, and that is as a result of misinformation on social media".
