National Hockey League suspends Leafs' Kadri for rest of series for hit on DeBrusk

  • Mirtle A lot went wrong for the Maple Leafs in Game 2. But Nazem Kadri’s foolish play could cost them the series

That would cost Kadri three games and force the Leafs to play Tomas Plekanec - who was previously the fourth-line centre - in the top six.

The Maple Leafs center has been suspended for the remainder of the first round for cross-checking the Bruins' Jake DeBrusk in the face during Toronto's 4-1 loss to Boston in Game 2 on Saturday.

DeBrusk said postgame he underwent a series of tests after leaving the game and is waiting for the results before he learns if he can play Monday in Game 3.

Kadri certainly won't get the benefit of the doubt with his suspension history. His inability to control his emotions may have prevented him from playing that role, and may ultimately provide him a one-way ticket out of town. All four games are lined pretty tight and there's a different feel to these series than the ones that were played last night. We're in a best-of-5 now, we've got to dig in. We liked our game in Game 1, felt real good about yourself.

The refereeing of Brad Meier and Trevor Hanson in Game 2 wasn't exactly brilliant, for either the Leafs or the Bruins, and Babcock had an interesting answer when asked whether he was surprised with what was not called during the game. "(Kadri) is obviously an important player for us, but it's all hands on deck". The Bruins had it.

That means he is nearly certainly looking at a hefty suspension that could sideline him for the remainder of Round 1, and perhaps beyond should the Maple Leafs advance.

Once the puck was dropped, Boston's forecheck looked as if there was line after line of Gronkowskis bearing down on the puck-carrier.

It was an active first period, but neither team broke through in the opening 20 minutes. The Leafs used their speed, skill and a surprisingly physical game to frazzle the Bruins.

Bruce Arthur of the Toronto Star: Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri will have his in-person hearing today.

Kadri's absence put the spotlight on William Nylander to hold the fort at centre between Patrick Marleau and Connor Brown.

Kadri was suspended for a cross-check to the face of Boston Bruin Jake DeBrusk. Kadri was ejected from the game after receiving a major penalty and game misconduct.

An in-person hearing means the league has the option to suspend Kadri for more than five games.

Kadri was not made available to the media following the game. "We'll get that figured out and go from there".

Toronto won Game 1 of the series 4-1 score at TD Garden.

He has emerged as an outstanding shutdown center that also has the 30-goal ability, and is also signed for three more years after this one at a team-friendly rate of just $4.5 million per season. I'm just hoping they come back negative. "It's going to be the same game plan, the level's just going to be ramped up because it's playoffs".

The Toronto Maple Leafs will have to do without Nazem Kadri for the rest of their first-round playoff series with the Boston Bruins.
