Although the crash dashed the hopes of engineers and fans around the world that had been rooting for your spacecraft's safe arrival, the group highlighted that the mission was still a victory for reaching the moon and coming so close to landing.

The project started eight years ago when its co-founders attempted to win the Google Lunar XPRIZE challenge by being the first private team to land a robotic spacecraft on the moon, travel 500 meters, and transmit back to Earth high-definition video and images.

"It seems that a failure in our inertial measurements unit caused a chain of events in the spacecraft avionics which cut off the engines and caused us to lose the mission", said Opher Doron, general manager of the space division at Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

"If at first you don't succeed, try try again", said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was on hand for what organizers had expected to be a party. "They have paved the way for private missions to the Moon".

Beresheet was not just a scientific project, it was much more than that. "It's been an wonderful journey, I hope we get a chance for another one".

Regardless of this setback, Israel can now boast that is the seventh country to make impact on the moon. The spacecraft hitched a ride on a SpaceX rocket launched from Florida in February.

Around 20 minutes before the scheduled landing, engine firings slowed Beresheet's descent. "This is a tremendous achievement for SpaceIL, and we intend to launch Beresheet 2, which the state will also participate in building, proving our capabilities", he added. It also had a time capsule that included a Bible, Israeli cultural symbols and a picture of famed Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon, who died in the crash of the USA space shuttle Columbia in 2003. "Your hard work, teamwork and innovation is inspiring to all".

Although the Google prize expired in March without a victor having reached the moon, Israel's team pledged to push forward. "If we're successful, we'll inspire children to study the subjects that took us there". This resemblance to the moon will continue and will accompany us, also, all the way to the moon.

"The second I heard their dream, I wanted to support it", said Kahn. In Jewish tradition, we learn that the Jewish people are like the moon.
