Some of the controllers have a message that reads "Big Brother is Watching", but Mitchell says that only dev kits have that joke inside. [3/3] - Nate Mitchell (@natemitchell) April 12, 2019 To be clear, most Oculus users who have a device that includes any of these hidden messages will never actually see them.

As for what's next for the Oculus Touch controllers, they will be a part of the fully standalone Oculus Quest this Spring, which will launch with the first episode of Vader Immortal, a Star Wars VR series that we recently got our hands on.

Facebook said it accidentally hid freaky and "inappropriate" messages inside "tens of thousands" of virtual-reality controllers, including "Big Brother is Watching" and "The Masons Were Here".

Other hidden messages, placed onto hardware inside the controllers, included "Hi iFixit!"

While the vast majority of Oculus owners will never take apart their controllers and find the messages, news of the hidden content will nearly certainly raise eyebrows given Facebook's already tarnished public image.

"While I appreciate easter eggs", Mitchell tweeted, referring to inside jokes in software and media, "these were inappropriate and should have been removed". He also said that Oculus has fixed the production process to make sure this doesn't happen again.

'That said, as mentioned in Nate's tweet, the messages will be inside tens of thousands of controller pairs that will ship to consumers when Quest and Rift S ship.

According to a report from Business Insider, the affected Touch controllers are meant to ship with the upcoming Rift S and Oculus Quest headsets, and are not yet available.

Peace added: "We think it's important to be transparent with our community and take responsibility when there's an error". They have also indicated that the hardware of the actual products has not been compromised.

While it's not a particularly critical issue, having "Big Brother Is Watching" engraved onto a Facebook-owned product is ironic considering the company's current battles on data privacy and surveillance.
