  • Salmonella outbreak in 9 states linked to pre-cut melons, CDC says

"However, consumers may still have these products in their homes", FDA officials said in a news release.

The CDC has issued a food safety alert due to a recent salmonella outbreak from pre-cut melons distributed in 16 states. The items were sold at Kroger (Renaissance Food Group, Boar's Head Private Label), Target (Garden Highway Label), Trader Joes (Trader Joes label), Walmart (Freshness Guaranteed) and online Amazon through the Whole Foods Market label.

Almost 100 people have been reported sick from consuming these pre-cut melons.

They usually last for four to seven days and most people recover without treatment. Thirty (77 percent) of 39 people interviewed reported eating pre-cut melons purchased from grocery stores, including pre-cut cantaloupe, watermelon, honeydew, or a fruit salad mix or fruit tray with melon.

Caito Foods temporarily suspended production and distribution as both the company and the FDA investigate the possible contamination.

Information collected from stores where ill people shopped indicates that Caito Foods LLC supplied pre-cut melon to these stores.

Most people with salmonella experience diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The company has been advised by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that it has linked 93 illnesses to the strain of Salmonella under investigation.

According to the Illinois Department of Public Health, five cases have been reported in northeastern and eastern Illinois.

The melon was sold and bought in 9 states: Illinois, Alabama, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio and Missouri.
