  • Amazon tipped to launch a free, ad-supported music service to take on Spotify

Amazon would market the free music service through its voice-activated Echo speakers, a Billboard report said on Friday, adding that it could become available as early as this week.

The new service would feature a limited catalog and Amazon has reportedly offered to pay labels per stream in order to clear the licensing to offer free music via an ad-supported model.

Citing sources familiar with the plans, Billboard reported that Amazon is in talks to launch the music service as soon as this week.

Amazon now is very busy negotiating terms and conditions with several music labels to bring the ad-supported free service and expand its portfolio, as well as give a good taste of its music streaming platform to users - After all, a user could enjoy the free experience before deciding if he will upgrade to a paid plan. The tech giant's beefier music service, Amazon Music Unlimited, offers more than 50 million songs.

This new service, if it actually appears, would in theory be more convenient than those options - at least for the casual music listener who only wants to hear a couple of the latest hits every now and again. However, it costs Prime members an additional $7.99 per month - $9.99 for everybody else - and Echo-only listeners can get it for $3.99 a month. But with Amazon's music service not having the mindshare owned by Spotify, or being automatically installed on millions of smartphones like Apple Music, it's facing an uphill battle.
