Two other people were in custody and police said they were working to understand their involvement.

Australian man Brenton Harrison Tarrant, 28, formerly of the northern NSW town of Grafton, is the only person charged with murder from Friday's attack, confirmed as a terror attack by police.

Tarrant's occupation was not given on the charging document, and his address was provided as a place in Dunedin, more than 300 km south of Christchurch in New Zealand's South Island.

Authorities implemented extra security measures.

She has been an advocate for stricter and safer gun laws in the United States.

Police presence in Christchurch and around the country was heightened while families arrived to streets near the mosques with tributes for the victims.

At a news conference on Saturday afternoon local time, New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush said authorities would release more information on the victims soon.

Why was the country, thought of as among the most peaceful in the world, singled out for a horrifying terrorist attack?

The victims of Friday's shooting included immigrants from Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Indonesia, and Malaysia.

The dead also included four Egyptians, the country's Ministry of Emigration wrote on Facebook, as well as three Turkish citizens, according to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. She was shot in the face, the abdomen and the leg. Al-Daraghmeh told the station that his brother was also wounded and remained in stable condition.

"What I can say is that an 18-year- old man will appear in court on Monday but that arrest was tangential to this matter and we do not believe that he was involved in this attack either", Mr Bush said.

"It's the time for change", said Ardern. "It was his intention to continue his attack", the prime minister said. One of the women told Xinhua "No matter what cultural backgrounds, races or religions you are from, we are absolutely together".

Ardern urged the public not to share the "distressing" 17-minute video. In New Zealand, commentators also anxious that the horror would sow deep divisions in a society that has largely avoided the polarizations that have spread elsewhere.

A friend of Wasseim's, Carolyne Phillips, who was at the hospital with him, said he had undergone surgery for a perforated bowel, an injury to his pelvis and to get shrapnel and bone out of his hip socket.

The New Zealand premier said that he had been in possession of a "Category A" gun licence obtained in 2017. He had no criminal history in New Zealand or Australia and had not drawn the attention of the intelligence community for extremist views. An eighth victim died at the hospital.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Pacific Area Presidency also released a statement of support for Muslim communities and all others impacted by the Christchurch shootings.

"It's a fine line between telling the children this is the reality of it", he said, "and not exposing them to the true nature of humanity that can lead to this sort of thing".

"Charges have been laid, we can expect additional charges will be appearing in the high court on the fifth of April, so there is obviously a process that needs to be gone through here", she said.
