Stream your PC games from anywhere

15 March, 2019, 14:26 | Author: Rafael Roberts
  • Steam Link Anywhere lets you play your PC games wherever you like

Prior to this, the app only allowed users to stream their game on an Android device connected to the same network as their host PC.

The full list includes virtually any reasonably modern Android-based mobile device with the Steam Link beta app installed and any non-primary computer with Steam downloaded (you won't have to install your games to play).

The difference between these services is that PlayStation Now and, presumably, xCloud, will be streaming games you don't own via a subscription service model whereas Valve is simply making your own games available to you for free - a model that will appeal to more cost-sensitive gamers and those of us with already-massive Steam libraries.

Anyone who wants to use Steam Link Anywhere can access it by updating their Steam client to the beta build dated March 13 or newer, Valve said. It should be added that iOS users are now out of luck, as Apple keep rejecting Valve's attempts to get the app on the App Store.

This streaming of games is one of the use cases for 5G.

Update: Dec. 20, 2018 - Valve is no longer selling the Steam Link hardware, but it will continue to update and support the Steam Link app going forward.

While Microsoft and Google are getting ready to duke it out over their cloud gaming services, Valve still has a foot in the market.

Steam Link Anywhere is an extension of Steam Link that will enable users to connect to their PCs and play games from anywhere (thus the name), rather than being limited to a local network.

Remember that both the Steam client and the Steam Link Android app are in beta, so if this doesn't work for you (or doesn't work that well) don't be too surprised.
