Judge Paul Kellar said although Tarrant was facing only one murder charge, it was "reasonable to assume there will be other charges".

The attack, which Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern labelled as terrorism, was the worst ever peacetime mass killing in New Zealand and the country raised its security threat level to the highest. He was wearing a tunic and was handcuffed.

The attacks, which were allegedly were performed by Australian man Brenton Tarrant, have shaken the world with many marks of respect and tributes flowing through social media and mosques around the globe.

Tarrant's sickening film showed casualties crawling across the bloody floor of the Al Noor mosque as the terror suspect unloaded rounds into them. Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay on the floor, the video showed. Many, such as the alt-right, are hidden in plain sight, with their proponents given a platform on social media websites - including Facebook, on which one of the terrorists in New Zealand live-streamed his rampage - as well as mainstream Western news outlets. No images have emerged from the second mosque.

The man facing murder charges was an Australian citizen who had spent a lot of time travelling overseas and spent time only sporadically in New Zealand, Ardern said.

Two other suspects remain in custody.

A host of world leaders, including US President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Theresa May, expressed sorrow and disgust at the attacks.

Ms Ardern said "a complex and comprehensive investigation is under way", with Australian authorities involved. None of them had been on any security watch lists prior to the attack, officials said. "There were elderly people sitting there praying and he just started shooting at them".
