  • Rafael Nadal of Spain returns a shot to Filip Krajinovic of Serbia at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament Wednesday

Kyle Edmund suffered a straight-sets defeat to Roger Federer in their last-16 match at the Indian Wells Masters.

"It will be amusing that somebody other than Novak is still in", Kecmanovic said in reference to top-ranked countryman Djokovic.

"Being able to belt the ball like he does needs either a good start or good conditions, and he didn't quite find that".

Federer needed just over an hour to dispatch Briton Kyle Edmund 6-1 6-4 in their first career meeting and reach the quarter-finals on a sunny and breezy day in Indian Wells. "It's small gaps", Nadal said about the upsets.

The 19-year-old Canadian, seeded 24th, took on Poland's Hubert Hurkacz, who socked sixth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan in the third round.

"If I play Rafa there's extra energy in the building - there's always a lot on the line", he said.

Struff is vying to reach a first Masters series quarter-final.

"Overall I'm very pleased with that performance", said Federer, who has reached the final four without dropping a set, winning 38 of his 39 service games.

"He's been around for so many years and he doesn't really get overwhelmed by the occasion of playing on center court", he told reporters.

Thiem booked a meeting with 18th-seeded Gael Monfils of France, who defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-0, 6-2 in 57 minutes a day after the German stunned world number one Novak Djokovic in the third round.

"I'm really happy about it, especially since I didn't really do anything before this", said Kecmanovic, who will take on Canada's 13th-seeded Milos Raonic in the quarters. "He's got everything in the game".

Nadal commented "I probably played a little bit worse today than yesterday", adding "but in general terms [it's] been a positive victory again".

Federer will face Hurkacz for the first time in the quarterfinals. "Maybe because of the conditions".

His rival in the quarterfinals will be Russian Karen Khachanov who beat American John Isner 6-4 and 7-6 on Wednesday.

Dominic Thiem defeated Ivo Karlovic 6-4, 6-3 and will play Gael Monfils, a 6-0, 6-2 victor of the late match against Philipp Kohlschreiber.
