Pep Guardiola says Man City-Tottenham Champions League tie 'is 50/50'

  • Champions League: Tottenham face Manchester City, and it could be Liverpool v Manchester United

It's been an incredibly successful couple weeks for the Premier League with four clubs qualifying for the Champions League quarterfinals (Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham) and two others making the Europa League quarterfinals (Arsenal and Chelsea).

The two-legged quarter-finals take place on April 9-10 and 16-17.

However, fans will have cringed when United were coughed up alongside Barcelona on Friday, in what can only be described as the worst possible draw for the Manchester side.

The five-time Balon d'Or victor also drew a blank in prior quarter-final clashes with Juventus, twice against Atletico Madrid and in Barca's 2015 tie with PSG.

Klopp's Liverpool are fighting for Premier League and Champions League silverware after splashing the cash on Alisson, Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri in the off-season. United lost 0-2 at home to PSG and, with so many senior players unavailable for the return leg in France, Solskjaer and his team produced a stunning comeback to knockout Mbappe and company.

The draw had an unusual feel with neither Bayern Munich nor Real Madrid in the hat, the first time both European giants have failed to reach the last eight since 2005-06.

United have to find a way to stop Lionel Messi, but that will be just one of many challenges facing caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who famously scored the winning goal for United in their 1999 Champions League final win against Bayern Munich at Camp Nou.

Barcelona defender Gerard Pique also played in the two finals against Man United, where he spent four years early in his career. "It's not by accident that three German clubs are eliminated by three English clubs".

FC Porto, who won the competition in 2004 under Jose Mourinho, are confident they can spring an upset after last year's mauling.

"Let's not disrespect Porto because they got to this stage for a reason, but they won't be looking forward to that tie". There are six teams in the Premier League and we can not say they are bad because all of them are in quarter-finals [Arsenal and Chelsea are in the last eight of the Europa League].

The final is scheduled for June 1 at the Metropolitano Stadium, the home of Atletico Madrid.
