"I am disappointed by Paul's decision to resign and surprised by the reasons he has given in his statement", he said."Both myself and the staff at the club gave Paul all the support and autonomy that he asked for".

"I hoped to, at the very least, see out my initial 18 months as the manager of a club I've supported all my life".

Now, it seems like former teammate Solsksjaer has opened the door for Scholes, saying: "He's invited here if he wants to come and have a little chat about it, we've texted and it didn't work out, that's just management". The fans, players, my friends and family all knew how proud and excited I was to take this role.

Oldham owner Abdallah Lemsagam said Scholes had resigned by text message and he had not heard from the former England global since.

The 44-year-old took charge at Oldham last month and won his first match, but the ex-England midfielder failed to pick up another victory in his next six games and leaves with the side languishing in 14th place in the fourth tier.

Scholes was appointed to take over from Pete Wild at the League Two club in February, but surprisingly left after just 31 days, alluding to circumstances outwith his control restricting his ability to do the job outlined when he was appointed.

Oldham issued a statement shortly after to confirm Scholes' decision.

United suffered their first Premier League defeat under Solskjaer at Arsenal last weekend, and will look to recover when they visit Wolverhampton Wanderers in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Saturday.

The event, named Stand up for Latics, comes amid serious concerns over the running of the club following Scholes's hasty exit.

During his pre-match press conference on Friday morning, Scholes' former Man Utd teammate, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, talked about the ex-England worldwide and the Oldham job.
