Boeing says it will soon issue a software upgrade for the 737 MAX 8, presumably in response to its own investigation of the Lion Air crash.

Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam said their pilots had received special training.

The decision to ground the entire fleet comes just after the USA announced it is to issue an "emergency order" grounding all Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 aircraft following the crash in Ethiopia, president Donald Trump has said.

A handful of lawmakers of both parties have called for the aircraft to be banned from USA airspace.

Lebanon and Kosovo barred the Boeing 737 Max 8 from their airspace, and Norwegian Air Shuttles said it would seek compensation from Boeing after grounding its fleet. Boeing has more than 5,000 orders outstanding for the 737 Max 8 aircraft, which is expected to be a large driver of business in the years ahead.

"The little extra costs they are incurring, they can probably get that covered by Boeing", Rasch-Olsen said.

It follows Sunday's fatal Ethiopian Airways crash involving a Boeing 737-8 Max plane.

The plane, Boeing's newest, has been involved in two crashes in less than six months. According to a preliminary investigation by Indonesia's airport authority, the plane's sensors were showing incorrect speed and altitude readings during another flight hours before the disaster.

'However, after consultation with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and aviation authorities and its customers around the world, Boeing has determined - out of an abundance of caution and in order to reassure the flying public of the aircraft's safety - to recommend to the FAA the temporary suspension of operations of the entire global fleet of 371 737 Max aircraft'.

The UK, the European Union, China, Australia and India are among the countries that have suspended the Boeing 737 Max from their airspace.

Southwest and American Airlines are still flying the Boeing 737 Max 8.

Passengers were mixed over President Donald Trump's decision to take them out of the skies.

Will Sunday's crash affect confidence in modern air travel?

Only charred fragments of victims remain, meaning it will take weeks to identify all of them using dental or DNA testing.

The regulators' decision has been prompted in part by an eerie similarity between the Ethiopian Airlines crash and last October's Lion Air disaster in the Java Sea, which killed 189 people. "We should not have these up in the air at all", Kimber Climie said.

The passengers came from more than 30 nations.

Boeing has confirmed that, for the past few months, it has been developing a "flight control software enhancement" for the aircraft, but says it is confident they are safe to fly.

"We discussed the departure at length and I reviewed in my mind our automation setup and flight profile but can't think of any reason the aircraft would pitch nose down so aggressively", one pilot said.

Shortly after, and possibly because, details of that telephone conversation surfaced, and with Canada bringing down the ban hammer, the FAA was allowed to ground 737 Maxes. They are voluntary safety reports and do not publicly reveal the names of pilots, the airlines or the location of the incidents.
