  • Kim Jong-nam murder trial: prosecutors reject request to free Doan Thi Huong

The decision means that Doan Thi Huong of Vietnam will remain as the only suspect in the case still behind bars, CNN reported.

The legal teams of both women have argued that they were pawns in the audacious assassination of Kim Jong-nam, 45, that was orchestrated behind-the-scenes by North Korean agents.

Siti Aisyah was freed from custody without acquittal and allowed to return home Monday, a day before Moon arrived in Kuala Lumpur for a three-day state visit.

The spokeswoman affirmed that soon after the incident occurred, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs directed related agencies to meet Huong and her family, as well as finding lawyers and witnesses as regulated by the host country's laws and worldwide practices.

"Vietnam will request Malaysia to give fair treatment to Huong and release her as soon as possible", he told reporters as he left the court.

Indonesia lobbied behind the scenes for Aisyah's release and Malaysia's attorney-general Tommy Thomas agreed to free her citing "the good relations between our respective countries".

Judge Azmi Ariffin adjourned court on "humanitarian grounds", saying Huong appeared "not well".

He ordered the women to mount a defense against what he said was a "well-planned conspiracy" hatched with four North Korean suspects.

South Korea accuses Pyongyang of plotting the murder of Kim Jong Un's estranged relative, who was once seen as heir apparent to the North's leadership. "Her case is the same as Siti Aisyah's".

Another lawyer for Huong urged Malaysia's attorney-general to explain why he dropped the case against Aisyah but not Huong.

Huong and Ms Siti Aisyah were charged with killing Kim by smearing his face with VX poison, a banned chemical weapon, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in February 2017. There was security camera footage of Huong.

Both women maintain they were tricked into carrying out the attack, which they thought was part of a TV reality show.

Prosecutors had sprung a surprise on Monday by asking the court to drop the charge against Siti Aisyah and free her.

Two other North Korean nationals, whom Malaysian police had identified as persons of interest in the investigation, were on the same commercial flight that carried Kim's body out of Malaysia.

"My message to the other woman workers, please don't easily trust the others".

Two days earlier, Vietnam Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh had called his Malaysian counterpart to ask that Doan be released as well, according to Vietnamese state media. "If you want to do something, you have to understand what is that exactly", she said.

Vietnamese authorities had been tight-lipped about the case.
