  • Federer breezes into Indian Wells semis

"I went back to the house and relaxed".

The longtime foes have amassed 37 Grand Slam titles between them - Federer with 20 and Nadal with 17 - and built a unique relationship over 15 years and 38 prior matches, not to mention countless promotional and charitable activities off the court together.

World No 2 Nadal took a 5-0 record over the Russian into their match and if the Spaniard extends that dominance it will set up the 39th meeting between him and Federer - their fourth at Indian Wells. Nadal said he hoped to be ready to battle again with Federer, but with a pragmatism born of hard experience he couldn't help but hedge.

"I was really looking forward to the match and I'm sorry it didn't happen".

Nadal said: "I warmed up today and I felt that my knee was not good to compete at the level I needed to compete in semifinals". "The way he came up was very clay-court based, and I was apparently very grass-court based, and we both found our ways also on the other surface", Federer said.

Nadal choked up discussing his withdrawal last fall, and he appeared near tears on Saturday.

The 32-year-old was playing only his second event since reaching the final of the Australian Open; he lost to Nick Kyrgios in the last 16 of the Mexican Open.

"Even if sometimes it's tough for me to accept all these things that I am going through during all my career, sometimes I feel sad because I feel always in disadvantage compared with all my opponents in terms of preparation and in terms of practice and sometimes under competition", an emotional Nadal said.

"I am used to playing with some issues, so I just tried to be focused".

"All the things that are in my hands I am doing well".

Fans were left shattered by the news.
