Labour: MPs must reject May's Brexit deal

Speaking after the rejection of her deal on Tuesday by 391 votes to 242, the Prime Minister told the Commons that MPs will now have to decide whether they want to delay Brexit beyond March 29, the designated date of departure; hold another referendum; or whether they "want to leave with a deal but not this deal".

In January, May's Brexit plan was rejected by the MPs with a 230-vote margin.

Mr Corbyn then pressed Mrs May to confirm how she will vote on the no-deal Brexit motion, which seeks to rule out leaving without a Withdrawal Agreement but also notes leaving without a deal remains the default position in United Kingdom and European Union law.

Meanwhile, Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator, warned Tuesday that the European Union was no longer interested in negotiating a new deal.

Moments after MPs voted, the prime minister told them that her deal...

But backbench Tory MPs - including former ministers - called for heads to roll and urged Mrs May to restore discipline within the Government.

A cross-party amendment selected for consideration aims to "enable the House of Commons to find a way forward that can command majority support" on March 20, which could also start the process for "indicative votes".

Mrs May said a customs union was part of proposals put forward by Labour but argued these had "already been rejected" by MPs.

Corbyn added: "She needs now to show leadership".

Labour MP Jess Phillips said she would support a 21-month extension of the Article 50 oto prolong the withdrawal process.

"Obviously, what needs to happen next is to rule out no-deal that would be a disaster for our country - and to seek an extension, and I'm sure that is what is going to happen next".

May responded: "The deal that he's proposing has been rejected several times by this house". She won the vote by 412 to 202.

He told MPs: 'We either deliver on the result of the referendum, giving people and businesses across the country the certainty they're calling for and move on as a nation, or we enter into a sustained period of uncertainty during which time the government would work with this House to find a way through, but which I fear would do real damage to the public's faith in politics and trust in our democracy'.

The plan, known as the Malthouse compromise, is backed by Brexiteer members of the European Research Group of Tory MPs, as well as the DUP and former Remain ministers like Nicky Morgan and Damian Green.

Ahead of the no-deal Commons vote, the government announced that most imports into the United Kingdom would not attract a tariff in the event of a no-deal Brexit.
