  • Lead roles North Korea leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump meet in Hanoi Vietnam last month

At least two of the 10 assailants who broke into the embassy and interrogated diplomatic staff have been identified and have connections to the United States intelligence agency.

According to El Confidencial (in Spanish), the assailants gagged and tied up staff members, and took a number of computers.

A major Spanish newspaper says investigators in the country have linked an attack on the North Korean embassy in Madrid on February 22 to the US Central Intelligence Agency.

The CIA has denied involvement in the attack. The operation was perfectly planned as if carried out by a "military cell", sources close to the investigation were quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Spanish authorities said police were investigating an incident last week at the North Korean Embassy in Madrid in which a woman was hurt and, according to a North Korean government's aide, computers and cellphones also were stolen.

Local media reports that on the afternoon of 22 February, a group of 10 people broke into North Korea's embassy, north-west of the Spanish capital's centre.

Spanish investigators are probing an alleged attack on the North Korean embassy in Madrid.

Inside, the police reportedly found eight people tied up with bags over their heads. The hostages were beaten and interrogated.

North Korea's most recent ambassador to Spain, Kim Hyok-chol, played a key role ahead of the Hanoi summit, heading up the North Korea negotiating team that received a USA delegation in Pyongyang in early February to discuss denuclearisation. One woman was eventually able to climb out of a second-story window and contact Spanish police. Soon after officers arrived, the 10 assailants sped away. Minutes after that, two vehicles belonging to the embassy left the premises.

The attack on the North Korean embassy occurred on February 22, just days before U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met for a summit in Hanoi. The cars used for the getaway belonged to the diplomatic mission and were later abandoned in a nearby street.

But Mr Kim is now serving as a key envoy in North Korean talks with the U.S., and helped organise the recent summit in Vietnam.

The highly secretive investigation will be heard at Spain's High Court, the Audiencia Nacional, which could order the arrest of the identified assailants.

The talks failed to reach a nuclear accord.
