  • Johnny Manziel reportedly signs deal to join AAF

Manziel has signed the AAF's standard player agreement, according to a report by ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The move reunited Manziel with Alouettes coach Mike Sherman, who also recruited Johnny Football to Texas A&M.

According to Shefter, Manziel would have been allocated to San Antonio, but the Commanders waived his rights, so the controversial quarterback will go through the league's waiver system. Every team in the AAF will now have a chance to sign him in reverse order of the current standings, with the Memphis Express (1-5) getting first priority. The Express lost to the Salt Lake Stallions 22-9 in Week 6, losing quarterback Zach Mettenberger to an apparent ankle injury on their first offensive play.

The 26-year-old former Heisman Trophy victor last played for the Montreal Alouettes in 2018, where he threw for almost 1,300 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games. The former first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns could be the fourth quarterback to play for the team this season.

CFL commissioner Randy Ambrosie announced in December 2017 that the league would approve a contract for Manziel, who at the time was on the Tiger-Cats' negotiation list.

Manziel has dealt with several off-field issues. "We completed extensive background work to determine whether it would be appropriate for Johnny to play this season, and after consulting with many people familiar with his situation, we concluded that it would be good for him to resume his pro football career here at The Alliance". He was arrested in 2016 on a domestic violence charge, which was later dropped in exchange for his undergoing counseling.

He was taken with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 National Football League draft by Cleveland.
