The platforms weren't down for everyone, but many people were unable to access their profiles, with glitches in how the sites worked.

Facebook Messenger's desktop version did not load - but the mobile app appeared to allow the sending of some messages; however, users reported glitches with other kinds of content, such as images.

In some cases the apps could be accessed but would not load posts or handle missives.

The social media giant, which owns Instagram, said it was aware of issues people were having with Facebook's suite of apps. "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", the Facebook account said on Twitter.

Some Instagram users can see their feed, but not others, and everyone is having trouble posting anything.

It was speculated earlier by network management biz Netscout that a BGP leak caused today outages, a claim made by its PR team and now withdrawn as there was no evidence to actually support it. According to testing done by The Epoch Times, as of 4:15 p.m. ET, Facebook was still down.

Business owners have shared how they have been affected by an outage of Facebook's products.

"Facebook for personal use is fine - but what happens when we rely on large companies such as this to provide business services?" she said. "We've provided public testimony, answered questions, and pledged that we will continue to do so". However, users across the globe have complained about not being able to access the site.

Outages reportedly began around noon Eastern time on Wednesday afternoon.

The social network has announced a series of moves to tighten handling of data, including eliminating most of its data-sharing partnerships with outside companies.
