Donald Trump criticizes Theresa May for 'how badly' Brexit talks have gone

  • Taoiseach Leo Varadkar speaking at the US Chamber of Commerce in Washington DC during his visit to the US

The US president also said he did not think another vote on Brexit would be possible because it would be unfair, and reiterated that he would like to see a US trade deal with the United Kingdom after it leaves the EU. "And it's a shame that it has to be that way, but I think we will stay right in our lane".

Trump's comments come as the UK's parliament is set to vote later on whether to ask the European Union to request a delay to the UK's exit, due in just over two weeks on 29 March.

"If they don't talk to us we're going to do something that's very severe economically", Trump said.

Mr Trump also used Mr Varadkar's visit to the White House yesterday to warn Ireland and the EU the United States is "going to tariff a lot of their products coming in because the European Union treats us very, very unfairly".

Arlene Foster met US President Donald Trump at a St Patrick's Day celebrations lunch in Washington on Thursday.

But he now he says: "The potential is unlimited!"

The Irish PM said the most pressing issue facing his country was how to settle questions about the future of the border between Ireland, an European Union member, and Northern Ireland, which won't be. "There is every expectation in Washington that a U.S. -U.K. trade deal could be in place by the end of 2019 if Brexit goes forward this month and Britain successfully leaves the Customs Union".

Trump also got in a little plug for his Irish golf course and repeated an embroidered story about having predicted the surprise outcome of the 2016 British Brexit referendum. "He has consistently emphasized Brexit as a prerequisite for a new U.S. -U.K. free trade agreement, and administration officials and members of Congress have been working diligently to prepare for such an agreement", Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at The Heritage Foundation, tells VOA News.

However, Trump was referring to his trip to his own luxury golf club in Scotland.

Sitting beside Mr Varadkar, Mr Trump claimed the process of trying to reach a trade deal between the USA and the European Union contained difficulties.

Mr Trump has said he will be visiting the Republic of Ireland at some point this year. "I hate to see everything being ripped apart right now". "I stand here leader of my country, flawed and human, but judged by my political actions and not my sexual orientation, my skin tone, gender, or religious beliefs", he said.

"We talked about Brexit, something that is turning out to be a little more complex than they thought it would be".
