  • Resorts director James Gunn attends the grand opening of Guardians of The Galaxy- Mission BREAKOUT! attraction

In a huge reversal, Disney is welcoming James Gunn back to the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. The first two Guardians films by James Gunn made over $1.6 billion worldwide. The news comes almost eight months after The Walt Disney Company fired Gunn over a series of offensive, years-old, tweets. He will then move onto Guardians once he completes work on the DC supervillain team-up. Guardians Of The Galaxy 3 will go ahead as planned, as will Suicide Squad 2, also directed by James Gunn.

Horn chose to reverse the decision to fire Gunn, but there was now a small hiccup in the process.

Last July, Disney fired Gunn after decade-old tweets resurfaced in which he joked about topics including pedophilia and rape. The compiled Tweets fast circulated online, and Gunn was out at Guardians by the end of the same day. If you'll recall, Gunn was forced to vacate his seat when Internet hounds discovered a bunch of controversial Tweets assigned to his name. According to Deadline, Gunn attended several meetings with Walt Disney Studios President Alan Horn, and eventually Disney made a decision to shift course.

Gunn also confirmed the news on Twitter with an emotional statement.

"I am tremendously grateful to every person out there who has supported me over the past few months", Gunn wrote on Twitter.

Gunn added a thank you to Disney and said he was excited to "continue making films that investigate the ties of love that bind us all". "I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger".

And regardless of whether Gunn would of been directing, Pratt said in February that the film would be going forward using Gunn's script.

Guardians 3 was originally scheduled to be filming now and released in 2020.

Following his firing previous year, Gunn was snapped up by Warner Bros to write and direct The Suicide Squad sequel, starring Idris Elba, out in 2021.

The cast was very supportive of their director with Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista all signing an open letter to get the director back.
