Two heavily-armed young men wearing masks and hoods entered Raul Brasil State School and fired at students and staff, according to the country's military police, reports CNN.

Doria said the school had been evacuated and police were inspecting possible explosives left by the shooters.

While gun crime is common in Brazil, mass shootings like this nature are not.

Brazil's new President Jair Bolsonaro recently announced that gun ownership controls would be loosened.

The names and identities of the victims and the attacks have yet to be released and the motive for the attack is not clear. "It didn't take long until police arrived". Students at the school range in age from 11 to 18. He said authorities didn't believe the two were former students. The gunmen also went to the school's linguistic center, where students hid in a classroom.

Four children were among the dead after two gunmen opened fire inside the school near Sao Paulo.

While gun laws are extremely strict in Brazil, it is not hard to buy a weapon illegally.

The public school, Raul Brasil Professor, has more than 1,600 students from elementary to high school grades, teachers gathered outside said.

Earlier in the day, a man was injured in another shooting near the school, but police are investigating to see whether both cases are connected.

Crime scene photographs released by police show Monteiro, his head lying in a pool of blood, dressed in black with a machete tucked in his trousers.

"I was shocked with the scenes I saw inside that school".

Sao Pulo governor, Joao Doria, decreed a three-day official mourning, with flags at half-mast, for the 10 deaths occurred this Wednesday after a school shooting in the state.
