Chiefs Release Eric Berry

  • KANSAS CITY MO- DECEMBER 13 Kansas City Chiefs defensive back Eric Berry before an NFL game between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs

In what has to be described as a shocking bit of news around the National Football League, the Kansas City Chiefs have announced the release of five-time Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry. The Chiefs would have owed Berry $7.25 million if he had been kept on the roster until Friday. "Knowing what Eric has meant to this organization and this city made this an incredibly hard decision". He was voted first-team All-Pro three times. Berry also missed all but two games in 2018 but was on the field for the playoffs. Following the 2015 season, Berry was honored with the AP's Comeback Player of the Year Award as well as being the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award after overcoming Hodgkin's lymphoma.

"On behalf of my family and the entire Chiefs organization, I want to thank Eric for his many contributions to the Chiefs over the last nine seasons", Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said in a release.

The move comes following Kansas City's agreement with Tyrann Mathieu on a three-year, $42 million contract. According to Yahoo's Terez A. Paylor, the Chiefs will save $15 million against the salary cap over the next two years by releasing him with a post-June 1 designation.

The four were pillars for Kansas City during its renaissance under coach Andy Reid.

His teammate, Jeff Allen, wrote on Twitter, "I don't think I've ever played with someone that loves the game of football as much as Eric Berry. He will always be an important part of our Chiefs family, and we wish him nothing but the best in the future". The Chiefs are also expected to trade linebacker Dee Ford to the San Francisco 49ers for a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, reports say.

However, he aggravated the injury and missed the team's regular-season finale before playing against the Patriots in the AFC championship.
