Worshippers, possibly dead or wounded, lay on the floor, the video showed.

He has so far been charged with one count of murder, although judge Paul Kellar said it's "reasonable to assume" that more charges will follow, after yesterday's deadly shooting. He will appear in court on Saturday.

The President of French Polynesia, Edouard Fritch sent a message of support to New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, following the attack in Christchurch.

At the White House, Trump called the bloodshed "a bad thing" but rejected any suggestion the white nationalist movement is a rising threat around the world, saying it is "a small group of people that have very, very serious problems".

"I would not describe him as a long-term resident", she said. They gave no details about those taken into custody except to say that none had been on any watch list.

Political and Islamic leaders across Asia and the Middle East voiced concern over the targeting of Muslims.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the tragedy as a "terrorist attack" and noted numerous victims could be migrants or refugees. "1.3 billion Muslims have collectively been blamed for any act of terror".

Ardern said the investigation was ongoing but authorities believed there was only "one primary perpetrator". "We got scared, we asked ourselves what was happening", Sapkota said.

"I'm not privileged to a full breakdown at this point but it is clear that young children have been caught up in this horrific attack", she said regarding victims of the attack.

That rampage killed at least 41 people, while an attack on a second mosque in the city not long after killed several more.

Players and members of the team's coaching staff were reportedly on their bus, approaching the Masjid Al Noor mosque in Hagley Park when the shooting broke out.

The European Commission said the "senseless act of brutality on innocent people in their place of worship could not be more opposite to the values and the culture of peace and unity that the European Union shares with New Zealand".
