Vaping Is Erasing Gains Made Against Teen Smoking

  • US Surgeon General Dr Jerome Adams gives a statement on the use of e-cigarettes by teenagers in Washington,DC on Dec 18 2018

Some 3.6 million middle and high school students were current users of vaping products, up from 2.1 million the year before, while the number of cigarette smokers and consumption of other tobacco products remained stable, according to the report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He also said that health agencies such as the Center for Disease Control, warn against vaping because it carries long-term negative health effects.

The new report builds on evidence that youth e-cigarette use raises the risk of graduating to combustible cigarettes, he said.

The US categorises e-cigarettes as tobacco products, a definition not shared by all countries.

The regulation of e-cigarettes falls to Health Canada, which announced last week it was looking at new measures of restricting ads and limiting their visibility to youth. More than one in four high school students smoked or vaped within the previous month, the CDC found, and use of any tobacco product grew by almost 40 percent between 2017 and 2018.

With the sharp uptick in e-cigarette use, the CDC is likely to find the trend of increased use among youth will not end in 2018.

"Unlike tobacco, electronic cigarettes are not regulated, and from what we know nicotine is already addicting and these electronic cigarettes contain more nicotine than cigarettes", said Robinson. Some of the findings had been released before, including a boom among students who vaped. Both singled out the huge growth in sales of the e-cigarette brand Juul - introduced to the market in 2015 - as a major contributor to rise in youth e-cigarette use. "We know very little about the health effects of these new devices, so we designed this research to compare them with cigarette smoking and vaping". He also noted that federal law prohibits states from regulating tobacco product transport by truck, which could conflict with the proposal, as drafted. "I fear this trend will continue in 2019, forcing us to make some tough decisions about the regulatory status of e-cigarettes". But some products, including e-cigarettes and their frequently flavored oil pods, are available online. In 2018, the CDC said there was an increase in tobacco use, prompted by e-cigarettes, by 4.9 million teenagers.

Products manufactured by Juul have been shown to be especially attractive to minors because they come in fruity flavors such as mango, mint, and fruit and creme.

"JUUL entered the US market in 2015 and since December 2017 has held the greatest market share of any e-cigarette in the United States". E-cigarette maker Juul recently got a $12.8 billion investment from cigarette giant Altria. Since then, Gottlieb said that JUUL appears to be backtracking from previous statements about reducing youth use.

Previously, JUUL had promised FDA that it would limit its marketing, including by ending social media accounts that could be appealing to youth.
