  • OnePlus to show off 5G phone prototype at MWC 2019

The invite notes "5G gaming" which clearly hints at the OnePlus 5G phone.

OnePlus has been teasing its first 5G smartphone for quite some time.

The announcement of the 5G demonstration at MWC was posted by XDA Developers.

The phone will diverge from OnePlus' main family of flagship phones, which includes the OnePlus 6T, and will be one of the first previews many will get to see of a 5G phone.

OnePlus says that MWC visitors will be invited to "communicate with [their] community over a 5G network", though it's not clear what that entails.

Naturally, the device will be equipped with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 mobile platform and X50 modem, since 5G connection requires both. The company's CEO has already said it wants to offer 5G on a handset that'll cost less than £1,000 - something the big boys likely won't do.

CEO Pete Lau told CNet in an interview past year that he isn't expecting huge sales for the 5G model when it launches. At CES 2019 in January, Samsung showed off its own 5G phone under glass. Additionally, the popular brand revealed that attendees will be able to "experience the capabilities of 5G gaming" through one of its latest "OnePlus 5G Prototypes". The company is well known for the relatively short life cycles of its products, with improved versions launching roughly twice a year.
