"'There is nothing wrong with being gay".

West Indies fast bowler Shannon Gabriel has been banned for the first four one-day internationals against England after being found guilty of "personal abuse" in the St Lucia Test, the International Cricket Council (ICC) said on Wednesday. They were not offered for public consumption.

Gabriel could be fined half of his match fee and banned for up to four matches. It was natural, organic and, in a certain sense, rather wonderful.

"It's Test cricket and he's an emotional guy trying to do everything he can to win a Test match".

The incident was dealt with at the time by the on-field umpires but Gabriel was charged the following day after the footage received widespread attention.

It has been noted that Gabriel's comments were not caught on the microphone and the ICC have effectively set a precedent for future charges relating to on-field exchanges between players. "Sometimes people say things on the field that they might regret, but they should stay on the field", said Root.

"I think it is fair to say that neither of us ever expected the issue to escalate to the point that it has. Even in the fight of test cricket @root66 shows his class and morals and just what a sound bloke he is!"

Nasser Hussein, the ex-England captain, also paid tribute to Root by tweeting: "I don't know who said what to whom. but boy do I applaud Joe Root's reaction here".

Stonewall, a leading UK LGBT equality charity, had earlier led the plaudits for Root's calm response to Gabriel in the heat of battle.

Richard Pybus, the West Indies coach said nothing has been reported yet, but the team will review the incident and address what could be done.

Bowler Gabriel was confronted by the England captain but no formal complaint was made about his language.

The fast bowler's exact words weren't picked up by the stump mic.

"It's always a proper tussle out there".

"The series has been played in exceptional spirit, I wouldn't want to pre-empt anything. If it was untoward we will be addressing it".

At the end of day three, England were 325-4 in the second innings, with a commanding lead of 448 runs with Root and Ben Stokes at the crease.
