Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has confirmed that the January 2018-announced Super Mario movie produced by Illumination Entertainment will launch "around 2022".

Nintendo was once fiercely against releasing mobile games, but as fate would have it, this would prove a somewhat successful and lucrative endeavor for the company. According to the report (translated by Nintendo Everything), the new Switch will be a somewhat diminutive one, focused on "portability" and "playing outside".

It's likely that the title will feature the same free-to-play model with new stages offered through microtransaction.

Nintendo has been diversifying its business. Still Not sure how this was approved, though back then I am guessing studio execs weren't as savvy about video games as they are these days. This means that Dr. Mario World could be the first Nintendo mobile game that is the real deal. During the company's financial results briefing for the end of previous year, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the film is eyeing a 2022 release date.

The summer timing will put it smack in the middle of the gaming giant's new fiscal year, too, meaning that it could prove to be a big enrichment for a period that's normally pretty dry in the gaming world. "Mamma Mia!" after learning the latest title won't be released on time.

Super Mario Run, Dragalia Lost, Fire Emblem Heroes, and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp have all garnered massive player bases and rave reviews.
