  • The California Highway Patrol's Alfred Medina holds the infant girl who was found in the town of Madera Ranchos

According to ABC News, a newspaper delivery person found the baby early Monday lying "on the centre line of a roadway".

The man advised her to go to the children's hospital or the fire station before she drove away, Pogue said.

Fuentes, 21, initially thought the newborn was an animal, or perhaps a toy.

A man delivering newspapers on Route 36 in Madera Ranchos, Calif., around 4:30 a.m. Monday made a chilling discovery: a newborn baby abandoned in the middle of the road. "There could've been coyotes, there's cars going by fast down that road", Mr Fuentes said.

Aurelio Fuentes Jr. told the paper that he didn't know what he was seeing at first.

The Madera County Sheriff's Office said they are searching for the mother, who is accused of leaving the baby on the side of the road.

It is believed the newspaper carrier arrived a few minutes later to discover the dumped baby on the road.

The little girl was then rushed by ambulance to Valley Children's Hospital, where she remains in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit but is said to be "doing well".

The child is hospitalized in good condition and is expected to fully recover.

With the temperature at just 1C, Fuentes quickly wrapped the newborn baby up and took her to his vehicle to keep warm and called emergency services.

Authorities are now looking for the newborn's mother.

The woman was described as a "Hispanic female adult, possibly in her 20s". He referred her to a nearby fire station and hospital and left the area. She was last seen fleeing the scene in the small SUV of unknown make or model, authorities said.

California's Safely Surrendered Baby Law allows parents or persons with lawful custody to safely surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked, at designated safe drop-off sites.
