  • Eurovision 2019 UK Entry Revealed As Michael Rice And His Song Bigger Than Us Win Selection Show

Miller-Heidke's performance was defined by an absolute belter of an operatic note, but her dramatic aerial staging - which saw a swaying dancer hoisted metres off the ground - may have helped, too.

She came out on top with a total of 135 points, 87 points from the public and 48 points from the jury of industry experts.

Last year's United Kingdom entrant SuRie finished 24th out of 26 in the Eurovision song contest after a stage invader interrupted her performance by grabbing the mic and shouting slogans about the media.

Miller-Heidke topped Saturday's scoreboard, narrowly beating electronic group Electric Fields.

The lyrics to her song detail her struggle with post-natal depression and the feeling of weightlessness as she recovered.

The singer told the BBC he "100 percent" believed that his song, "Bigger Than Us", could carry Britain to glory on May 18.

"Having a child shakes your world".

The 37-year-old singer-songwriter earned the spot by winning the first ever Australia Decides competition on Saturday evening, held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, which saw 10 Australian acts perform for the public vote (conducted through text message) and before a panel of judges.

"We were lucky to have just a taste of the global phenomenon that is Eurovision with Eurovision - Australia Decides on the Gold Coast".

Miller-Heidke is likely to come under increased scrutiny, as activists have been calling for artists and broadcasters to boycott the event so long as the final is hosted in Israel.

The final of Eurovision - Australia Decides was aired live on SBS last night. Israeli pop star Netta Barzilai won Eurovision in 2018 with a quirky #MeToo-inspired entry, Toy.

Australia have ranked well in the Eurovision Song Contest since they joined in 2015, coming fifth with Guy Sebastian's Tonight Again, and second with Dani Im's Sound of Silence in 2016 (she was robbed, tbh).
