Job losses likely in 'brutal' no deal Brexit, Theresa May told

British government asked lawmakers on Sunday to give Prime Minister Theresa May more time.
But it was rejected by the UK Parliament and if it is not approved by Brexit day, the default position would be a no-deal Brexit.
Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said: "I think that gives that sense of timetable, clarity and objective on what we are doing with the European Union - taking that work forward and our determination to get a deal - but equally knowing that role that Parliament very firmly has".
The promise is a bid to avert a showdown on Thursday, when parliament is set to vote on the next moves in the Brexit process.
She revealed Parliament will play a bigger role in directing negotiations with the EU.
The debate on February 14 will be on a motion - a proposal put forward for debate - about Brexit more generally.
If no agreement on changes to the backstop are reached by Wednesday Mrs May is set to ask for more time for negotiations and will table a motion for debate.
None the less, addressing to a gesture of goodwill from EU leaders, who would want to ensure that UK leaves the bloc with a decipherable deal, which could also pass through to the House of Commons, the UK PM May said, "What I see and hear from leaders is a desire for us to work together to ensure that we can deliver the UK leaving the European Union with a deal".
The move is aimed at postponing a rebellion by ministers who are committed to removing the possibility of the United Kingdom crashing out of the European Union without a deal on March 29. It is likely that many amendments similar to those debated on January 29 will be proposed, including attempts to shift control of the process away from government and give parliament a chance to define Brexit.
Opponents of the government accuse May of deliberately wasting time so that Parliament will face a last-minute choice between her deal and no deal.
Last month, Parliament voted in favour of an amendment that supported most of the PM's deal but called for backstop - which is a last-resort option to prevent a hard border in Ireland - to be replaced with "alternative arrangements".
"The government will commit that if the meaningful vote, in other words the deal coming back, has not happened by the 27th of February, then we would allow a further motion - votable in Parliament - to take place, to give that sense of assurance as to the process moving forward", he told the BBC's "Andrew Marr Show".
