  • Video Shows Dianne Feinstein Dismissing Kids Asking About Green New Deal

"Well, it's not going to get turned around in 10 years", Feinstein responded, which is the political equivalent of telling a kid that the tooth fairy doesn't exist.

Feinstein countered that she understands the consequences of climate change.

"But we have come to a point where our Earth is dying, and it is literally a pricey and ambitious plan that is needed to deal with the magnitude of that issue", a 16-year-old student replied. Dianne Feinstein and a group of San Francisco Bay Area students squared off over climate change in a sometimes tense exchange captured on video and widely shared on social media.

This is a fight for our generation's survival.

Eventually, having exhausted of arguing with the group, Feinstein told one of them "Well, you know better than I do".

One of the older members in the group cut Feinstein off mid-sentence. You come in here and you say it has to be my way or the highway. "I have been and will remain committed to doing everything I can to enact real, meaningful climate change legislation".

"We are trying to ask you to vote on the Green New Deal", said one boy.

They then devolve into a back-and-forth where someone in the group tells her that they are "the people who voted" for her and part of her job is to hear their concerns. "We have our own Green New Deal", a mention of a climate proposal she said she's planning to introduce the Republican-controlled Senate.

Sunrise Movement accused Feinstein of responding to the children with "smugness" and 'disrespect'.

"Unfortunately, it was a brief meeting but I want the children to know they were heard loud and clear". Yes, the parents were using their kids as pawns and the group who confronted the California Democrat, the Sunrise Movement, who are pushing lawmakers to back Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's (D-NY) ruinously expensive Green New Deal. Cordoba added. "We don't have 30 years".

"We're the people who voted for you, you're supposed to listen to us", a teen activist said.

Later, a young woman stresses the need for a climate plan with "bold, transformative action", and Feinstein replies, "Well, you know better than I do". "I don't respond to that".

"And then you do it your way", Feinstein went on.

In the original video, the group can be seen and heard saying they wanted to present Feinstein with a letter asking her "to vote yes on the Green New Deal".

Republicans have attacked the Green New Deal, asserting it reeks of socialism, as The Post's Salvador Rizzo notes. What makes this encounter more of a PR fumble is that young climate activists - perhaps more so than other issue for those who can not vote yet - have the greatest interest in securing aggressive policy, as they will be around much longer than anyone born in the 20th Century to experience the rough-and-tumble catastrophes of environmental collapse.
