According to a family spokesperson, the British actor died "peacefully after a short illness with those closest to him by his side". The Guardian describes a chest infection, noting the actor previously revealed he had kidney cancer.
Born on May 9, 1936 in Salford, U.K., Finney worked in the industry for a number of years before getting thrust into the global spotlight with his first of five Oscar-nominated roles, the title lead in 1963's Tom Jones.
British actor Albert Finney, who rose to fame on a post-war wave of gritty, working-class dramas and became an Oscar-nominated global star, has died at the age of 82.
He started his career at the Royal Shakespeare company before he transitioned into film and starred as the "angry young man", Arthur Seaton in "Saturday Night and Sunday Morning".
Albert Finney, the five-time Oscar-nominated British actor who starred in the likes of Skyfall, Erin Brockovich, the original Murder on the Orient Express, and the Best Picture-winning Tom Jones, has died at age 82.
The 1960s also saw Finney star in Night Must Fall and Two for the Road with Audrey Hepburn.
The actor has two sons, Simon and Michael.
Throughout his career, Finney moved seamlessly between films, television and stage performances. His other four Academy Awards followed later for Murder on the Orient Express, The Dresser, Under the Volcano and Erin Brockovich.
To millions of people, however, Finney will always be Daddy Warbucks - having played the beloved bald billionaire in the 1982 film adaptation of the hit musical Annie. I had the enormous privilege of working with him early on.
Over the following six decades, Finney would rack up over 50 credits on the big and small screen alike. However, fans of pop and geek culture probably know Finney best for his roles in big modern franchises like James Bond's Skyfall; as the shadowy mastermind doctor in The Bourne Ultimatum and the Bourne Legacy spinoff films; and Tim Burton projects like Corpse Bride and Big Fish.
