White House asked for Iran attack options

The Wall Street Journal quoted a former senior US administration official saying of the NSC's request for military options regarding Iran, "People were shocked".

The report states, "As part of the talks, Mr. Trump's National Security Council, led by John Bolton, asked the Pentagon to provide the White House with military options to strike Iran". "People were shocked. It was mind-boggling how cavalier they were about hitting Iran".

The Times tried to create distance between Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, writing, "But Mr. Pompeo also opposed the idea of an airstrike on Iran after its attack on the embassy, according to a former senior administration official..."

In addition, two rockets were fired toward the secure compound of the U.S. Consulate in city of Basra, in southwest Iraq.

The request was made after militants in Iraq aligned with Iran fired mortars at Baghdad's diplomatic district, which includes the U.S. Embassy, the report said.

Officials said the Pentagon did develop options for striking at Iran, but it was not clear if the White House, or President Trump himself, received or knew about the request, or if a serious strategy was being considered.

"The Department of Defense is a planning organization and provides the president military options for a variety of threats", Colonel Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, told AFP.

The shells landed in an open lot and no one was hurt.

Relations between Tehran and Washington are highly fraught following Trump's decision in May to withdraw from a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers and to reimpose sanctions, including on Iran's vital oil sector.

Later in the month, US National Security Adviser John Bolton issued a stark public warning to Tehran: "There will be hell to pay" if Iran continued to "cross" the US and its allies. "If they're responsible for the arming and training of these militias, we're going to go to the source".

Official White House policy does not call for regime change in Iran, and Bolton has said he would implement the President's agenda.

There's no doubt that we could do plenty of damage to Iran if we chose to strike.
