What's more, the concept, which was developed in conjunction with Sundberg-Ferar, is based around a modular EV platform that allows different bodies to be switched and swopped when needed. Elevate is an electric vehicle with robotic legs, which can be used both to drive and to walk.
The legs of the Elevate also fold up into a stowed drive-mode, where power to the joints is cut, and the use of an integrated passive suspension system maximizes battery efficiency, so the Elevate can drive at highway speeds just like any other vehicle.
The manufacturer claims the model can climb a five-foot wall and step over a gap of the same distance - all while keeping the passengers level. "Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete", said John Suh, vice president and head of Hyundai Cradle, the firm's corporate venturing and open innovation business.
David Byron, industrial design manager for Sundberg-Ferar, speaks about the Hyundai Elevate.
And it's not just disaster zones, the vehicle makers hope to also help people living with disabilities that don't have access to ramps, they could use the auto as a taxi that could walk up to their front door, level itself, and allow their wheelchair to roll right in.
The auto maker Hyundai has revealed a new walking vehicle that they hope will be able to save lives in disaster zones.
However, Hyundai says that the need to design the Elevate concept is more humanitarian.
In addition to unveiling its latest concept vehicle, Hyundai also presented its future mobility road map at CES 2019. "The possibilities are limitless".
