White´s mother, Joanne White, told the Times that her son had visited Iran "five or six times" to see an Iranian woman described as his girlfriend.

Michael R. White, 46, from Imperial Beach, California, never boarded a return flight via Dubai in July, his mother told The New York Times.

IranWire had quoted a former Iranian prisoner as saying that while in prison, he had met White in a prison in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad.

His mother, Joanne White, declined to discuss why her son was being held. Only in recent weeks did State Department officials inform her that he was in an Iranian prison, White said. The State Department told her three weeks ago that he's now in an Iranian prison, the report said.

She is anxious about her 46-year-old son's health because he has had cancer and suffers from asthma, she said.

The New York Times noted that Iran did not acknowledge the arrest of Wang until July 2017. "I just want to see him home safe and sound", Joanne White said by phone.

He was visiting a woman whom he said was his girlfriend, she said.

A duty officer reached at the US State Department early Tuesday said the department's media team could not comment on the report due to the ongoing partial government shutdown.

"Due to privacy considerations, we have no additional information to provide at this time", the representative said. "The last time I had contact with him was July 13th". The State Department advises Americans not to travel to Iran "due to the risk of arbitrary arrest and detention".

Iran is now holding at least three other US citizens, including Siamak and Baquer Namazi, and Princeton professor Xiyue Wang, in prison. The Trump administration has not engaged in a dialogue with the Iranians to seek the current prisoners' release. The Islamic Republic has accused the three men of various crimes associated with espionage or "infiltration", but their families and USA officials say they are being held as leverage in the political standoff between the two nations.CBS News senior foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan notes that President Trump has often criticized his predecessor President Barack Obama for negotiating the release of American prisoners from Iran. We have no higher priority than the safety and security of USA citizens overseas.

In January 2016, Iran freed four U.S. prisoners - Washington Post journalist Jason Rezaian, Marine veteran Amir Hekmati, Christian pastor Saeed Abedini and Nosratollah Khosravi-Roodsari - in exchange for the USA granting clemency to seven Iranians indicted or imprisoned in the United States.
