  • Pompeo Visits Middle East to Increase Pressure on Iran

President Salih, answering a reporter's question on whether he wants the United States to keep troops, said Iraq "will need the support of the US" and expressed his "gratitude to the U.S. for support over the years".

But Bolton's comments Sunday to reporters in Israel marked the first time the US put specific conditions on withdrawal and demanded an agreement from Turkey on the Kurds.Erdogan said in his speech Tuesday that Turkey has completed preparations for a military operation in Syria.

The US forces have been working with a Kurdish militia to fight against Islamic State. He told you that 9/11 led my country to abandon its ideals, particularly in the Middle East.

Pompeo also faulted what he called Obama's "desire for peace at any cost" that led him to strike the 2015 nuclear deal under which Iran agreed to curtail its nuclear weapons program in exchange for easing of worldwide economic sanctions.

The US top diplomat made his remarks while on a whistlestop tour of the Middle East to address the concerns of regional allies about the surprise pullout plan.

The dozens of remaining vacancies stem from both political fights on Capitol Hill and Trump's apparent lack of urgency in putting forward nominees. Pompeo said. "In just 24 months, actually less than two years, the United States under President Trump has reasserted its traditional role as a force for good in this region, because we've learned from our mistakes". What to do with them has become a critical and growing problem for the Trump administration as it prepares to pull troops out of the country. Other nominees have faced sexual harassment lawsuits or been embroiled in federal investigations.

Words of war: President Erdoðan addresses the Turkish parliament, where he said preparations for an attack were nearly complete. "It's a crying shame that this is the new normal".

The US troop withdrawal from Syria will not be scuppered despite Turkish threats against Washington's Kurdish allies there, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Wednesday, promising to ensure that the Kurds would still be protected.

The announcement shocked allies and several USA defence officials, including Defence Secretary James Mattis, resigned shortly afterwards.

Iraqi analyst Hani Ashour, who teaches political science at Baghdad University, told Sky News Arabia that the "Iraqi parliament was due to debate US troop levels in Iraq Thursday, following protests by some political parties over fears the USA was moving troops it was withdrawing from Syria to Iraq".

The central question is how a vast and consistent regional policy can even be attempted when multiple, at times quite disparate, voices are telling their interlocutors simply what they want to hear in the wake of their president spreading vastly different ideas.

Before his arrival in Ankara, Bolton said that no USA troops would leave northern Syria until Turkey agreed to not attack the Syrian Kurds.

"There's no change in our commitment to the defeat of the caliphate or of ISIS globally".

During a brief photo opportunity, Pompeo was chatting with the monarch, mentioning a speech by President Trump, to be delivered from the Oval Office later Tuesday. "We will withdraw our forces, our uniformed forces, from Syria and continue America´s crushing campaign", Pompeo told reporters.

The trip also follows National Security Adviser John Bolton's visit to Turkey this week, where he was snubbed and then publicly criticized by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan over the shifting US conditions for a withdrawal from Syria. Turkey's Defense Minister Hulusi Akar has held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Shoigu ahead of the possible visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Russia, the Turkish Defense Ministry said in a statement posted on its official Twitter account on Wednesday.

The United States now has no ambassador to Turkey.
