A recent New York Times report alleging that President Donald Trump was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a potential national security threat as well as a Russian agent has sent shockwaves through the nation, but Secretary of State Mike Pompeo brushed it off as absurd.

Trump also said he had "a great conversation" with Putin during their one-on-one, almost two-hour meeting in Helsinki in July 2018.

The Times article, which was published Friday, reveals that the investigation was opened in May 2017 immediately after Trump's firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

During a friendly television interview with Fox News host Jeanine Pirro on Saturday, Trump blasted the notion that he is - or ever was - a secret agent for Russian Federation.

When asked by Pirro on Saturday about the Times' report and whether he had ever worked for Russia, Trump said, "I think it's the most insulting thing I've ever been asked". "I think it's the most insulting article I've ever had written, and if you read the article you see that they found absolutely nothing". You sit with the president of various countries.

The ex-national security advisor, Michael Flynn, pleaded guilty to lying to investigators about his Moscow ties.

Officials also told the Post that they never received a full, detailed account of Trump's meeting with Putin in Helsinki in July 2018.

"I'm not keeping anything under wraps, I couldn't care less".

The FBI investigation was subsequently folded into the broader probe by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election and possible collaboration by the Trump campaign.

Cell phone records show that Cohen was near Prague during the summer of 2016, supporting claims that he met there with Russian officials during the presidential election campaign, McClatchy news service has reported. The Times says it's unclear whether Mueller is still pursuing the counterintelligence angle.

Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani told the Times he had no knowledge of the counterintelligence inquiry but said that since it was opened a year and a half ago and they hadn't heard anything, apparently "they found nothing".

The president also hinted that the Russian Federation collusion "hoax" would soon backfire badly on the perpetrators, including some individuals whom he didn't identify because it would make "front page news" if he did.

Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is close to Trump and chairs the Judiciary Committee, said he intends to ask the FBI director if there was a counterintelligence investigation into the president.

In an interview for CBS News' "Face the Nation" set to air Sunday, Pompeo declined to engage in a serious discussion on the report when host Margaret Brennan asked for his reaction.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin last week defended the decision, saying the companies are undergoing a major restructuring to "sever Deripaska's control and significantly diminish his ownership".

"We know for a fact that Paul Manafort provided campaign data to Konstantin Kilimnik who has ties to Russian military intelligence - so there's that", Tapper interjected.
