Super blood wolf moon: Skywatchers get rare treat

The eclipse coincided with the year's first supermoon, when the moon's proximity to the Earth makes it appear larger and brighter.

And while the events alone aren't totally uncommon, when they are combined they make for a spectacular display.

Lunar eclipses can occur only during a full moon, and this one was extra special because it was also a supermoon. Still, space enthusiasts who missed this week's show may have to wait quite some time before the next total lunar eclipse.

National Geographic describes the eclipse during the wolf moon and the "super" tag is given because the moon is closer to the Earth than usual.

The eerie sight is caused by sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere and illuminating the moon in dramatic fashion, turning it red.

On Sunday, 20 January 2019, we had nine telescopes at the Camino Real Marketplace Plaza to view the lunar eclipse.

Depending on the weather conditions, observers saw a moon that was either blood-red, brick-toned or copper. And David Wahl, the Director of Awesome at Seattle's Archie McPhee novelty emporium, suggested that from now on, each night's moon should be given a jazzy name. By 11 p.m., the reddish, "blood" cast had almost wrapped itself over most of the visible lunar surface.

This turns the moon a bright red, so lunar eclipses are often called blood moons.

The next eclipse is only expected in 2021.

Vincent said solar eclipse is about the masculine and lunar eclipse is about the feminine energy.

The blood moon was clearly visible in Northland and many people got to see it, while some photographed it and others took a chance to have some fun images taken.

Blood moons and lunar eclipses of the past Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, created fear in 1504 after he used knowledge of an upcoming blood moon to convince the Arawak Indians to help him while stranded in Jamaica.
