Rep. Steve King of Iowa was quoted in The New York Times as saying: "White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization - how did that language become offensive?"

Earlier on Thursday, the New York Times printed a long interview with King in which he was quoted musing about why the labels were "offensive".

It's not the first time some Republicans have denounced King, nor the first time King has said his intent is to defend "Western civilization". 'Why did I sit in classes teaching me about the merits of our history and our civilization?'

Law&Crime contacted King's office for comment on this, but they have not responded.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has been the leader of the House Republican caucus for just one week.

King, 69, has attained notoriety for statements and positions that appeal to white nationalists.

King, who has been widely criticized in the past for his support of far-right parties and politicians, pushed backed against the Times' suggestion "that I am an advocate for white nationalism and white supremacy".

"I reject those labels and the evil ideology that they define".

"America's values are expressed in our founding documents ... and we take pride that people of all races, religions, and creeds from around the globe aspire to achieve them", he said.

"The U.S. House of Representatives must censure Rep. Steve King for his racists remarks".

Iowa Congressman Steve King is once again seeking to distance himself from his own words as fellow Republicans in Congress accuse of him of making more racist comments.

Following the report's publishing, King argued in statement posted on his Twitter account that he is "simply a Nationalist".

King barely survived a challenge from Democrat J.D. Scholten in November, as his race became nationalized amid a series of controversial public comments. "We must stand up against white supremacy and hate in all forms, and I strongly condemn this behavior".

Randy Feenstra, a Republican state senator, announced Wednesday that he plans to run against King in 2020.
