Retailers slash iPhone prices after Apple sales warning

Apple plans to launch three iPhone models this year with some new camera features, including three rear cameras for the most expensive model and two for the other models, the Wall Street Journal (paywall) reported on Friday.

The problem is that even if Apple now wanted to pivot away from releasing an iPhone with an LCD display, it's likely too late in the planning cycle for Apple to make any significant changes.

The iPhone 11 Max (the name is just a placeholder), the successor to the current 6.5-inch iPhone XS Max, will get an all-new triple-lens rear camera system. As for the other two iPhones, it will continue with a dual-camera setup.

Apple's purported focus on cameras shows that it wants to keep the iPhone competitive with rival smartphones that heavily emphasize the importance of photography chops.

Looking ahead to 2020, Apple apparently might ditch LCD altogether. The report notes that Apple chose to stick with a second XR generation because the new iPhone with an LCD screen has been in the product pipeline for months and plans can't be altered easily.

It is worth to mention that a week after the shock created by the announcement of a downward adjustment of its revenue forecast for the last quarter of 2018, we learn that Apple has chose to reduce by 10% the production of the new iPhones. "Or, Apple might be under pressure to clean out its stock of iPhones", he said.

Offering what sound like iterative updates in 2019 could prove to be a controversial decision on Apple's part, explains the report. Currently, the iPhone XR is the only model that doesn't have 3D Touch and instead has Haptic Touch, a feature that uses long-display presses and haptic feedback to evoke new actions. Industry watchers have said that their higher price tag-the iPhone XS starts at $999 and the iPhone XS Max starts at $1,099-hobbled sales and forced Apple to revise its production downward to address lower-than-expected demand.
