According to daily radio series EarthSky, the peak of the shower will unfold from the morning of January 4 (Friday) into the first few hours of January 5 (Qatar time).

The new year began with the most distant flyby of a planetary object, and it continues with the Quadrantid meteor shower tonight, one of the best annual shows in the night sky, according to NASA.

The Quadrantid shower lasts for weeks, but it has a very narrow peak of a few hours with maximum activity. The best hours are late night and early predawn-and tonight is when the show is going to reach its peak.

Those in the Northern Hemisphere have the best chance of seeing them, especially if they're in a dark moonless area.

Robert Lunsford of the American Meteor Society says observers in the United States can expect around 25 Quadrantids per hour at its best.

Though intense, the Quadrantids feature only a brief peak.

There's a good chance the shower will be bright and clear enough to see with the naked eye, so no telescope needed.

What you'll see: You'll likely see 80 meteors per hour, if not more.

The Quadrantids appear to come from a constellation called "Quadrans Muralis", which was created in 1795 but is no longer recognised as a constellation.

If the meteor shower's name sounds odd, it's probably because it doesn't sound like it's related to a constellation, like other meteor showers. You don't need any special gear to view the shower, but be sure to give your eyes 15-30 minutes to adjust to the darkness when heading out! Each year, Earth passes through this debris trail for a short time.

Taking place around Christmas, residents in Asia, Eastern Europe, Western Australia, and East Africa will get to witness the celestial beauty of an annular solar eclipse, or what is also known as a partial eclipse.
