Project Cars devs' next-gen console sounds like a bad idea

  • A New Game Console Is On The Way To Compete With Xbox And PlayStation

Slightly Mad Studios is an independent London based developer best known for the Project Cars racing-game series on PCs and consoles, which includes a fantastic VR mode on PCs.

Slightly Mad Studios might have gone, well, slightly mad with the announcement of the Mad Box console. Bell says the Slightly Mad console (dubbed The Mad Box) will be "the most powerful console ever built". Bell also stated that the console would be priced "competitive with upcoming console prices" suggesting it'll be in-line with the eventual PS5 and Xbox Two, or whatever they end up being called. The Mad Box will be capable of VR gaming and will be equivalent to a "very fast PC 2 years from now".

For many years, the PlayStation and Xbox have been the go-to consoles for serious gamers, but a newcomer wants to change that. What do you think about the Mad Box? "The "new" possibly being many of those that benefit from our completely free development engine", Bell said. He said that Slightly Mad "plan to allow games from all developers, old and new", who'll get to use the studio's own cross-platform development engine. After some confusion, he said the console would enable 60fps per eye in VR, making a total of 120fps.

Bell also said they're now negotiating with component manufacturers, so they can't reveal many details about their upcoming console. This means we shouldn't expect to see any Kickstarter or Indiegogo-type crowdfunding campaigns. It'd be hard to pull off 4K, 120 FPS, and VR support in a modern machine while keeping it under the price point of a brand new home gaming console.

"We think the industry is a little too much of a monopoly or a micro oligopoly", Bell told Variety.

We should be seeing additional information coming from Bell and Slightly Mad Studios over the next few weeks, as early design builds will be on their way out in four to six weeks. Are you interested in getting the Mad Box? To be fair, many things seem far fetched until they arrive, as the first Xbox likely seemed when it released to take on the Sony PlayStation.
