The Cleveland Cavaliers are now under investigation by the National Basketball Association at the request of the Golden State Warriors, who had former restricted free agent Patrick McCaw snatched from their very hands after failing to match a two-year, $6 million offer for his services.
The Warriors didn't match the offer, making McCaw a member of the Cavs.
The NBA is reportedly investigating the Cavs for signing and waiving McCaw, and could ultimately punish the team by taking away a first-round draft pick. McCaw was free to sign with any team after clearing waivers. Most league executives are skeptical over possible punishment for the Cavaliers, who had a three-game window to evaluate McCaw and cut him before the league's contracts became guaranteed for the season.
Now, McCaw joins Toronto's bench as the Raptors pursue an Eastern Conference championship.
The NBA is trying to find out if there was any wrongdoing when the Cavs signed McCaw to a deal in late December, when McCaw was a restricted free agent with the Golden State Warriors.
The circumstances were weird and raised questions about Cleveland's motivation to sign and release a player off the roster of their frequent NBA Finals rival.
"The Cavaliers could face punishments if the National Basketball Association finds any wrongdoing". But they could face a stiff penalty if found guilty of premeditatedly helping him escape his RFA status, standing to lose as much as a first-round draft pick, according to Joe Vardon of The Athletic. However, he only ended up playing three games with the Cavaliers, who waived him before that deal would become fully guaranteed.
