Seven people have died and five are critically injured after a bus carrying British tourists crashed in eastern Cuba.

The dead ranged in age from 32 to 67, according to a tweet by Radio Guantánamo, which identified the injured US citizen as Allison Alida Kemmer.

The crash - which took place at around 8pm on Thursday (3pm local time) - happened in a south-eastern city of Guantánamo, around 1,000 miles away from the capital Havana.

Citizens from the UK, Canada, France, Mexico and the Netherlands were reportedly on board.

Witnesses said the driver tried to pass another vehicle when he crashed.

A Frenchman and a German woman were also among the four tourists killed in the accident, along with three Cubans, the Venceremos newspaper said.

According to Radio Guantanamo, two Canadians were on the bus - a 56-year-old man and a 54-year-old man, however, the extent of their injuries is not yet known. The report did not specify if foreigners were among those in critical condition.

Cuban highways are poorly lighted, narrow and rutted with huge potholes. This most recent crash is the fourth bus crash there this month. Past year in all of Cuba there were over 11,000 auto accidents on their poorly-conditioned highways.

Traffic accidents are common in Cuba and have resulted in some 4,400 deaths since 2012, according to official data.
